Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have reached a record high, according to new data from the World Meteorological Organisation.

The report shows in 2013, CO2 levels were 0.74% higher than the previous year reaching 142% of pre-industrial levels primary because of fossil fuels.

The report shows that average increase in atmospheric CO2 in the previous decade corresponds to almost 45% human caused emissions.

Around half of human caused pollution is absorbed, which limits global temperature rise, but this year less was removed, which will cause alarm bells for scientists and governments around the world because the increased carbon left in the atmosphere could accelerate global warming.

There is no doubt that action must be taken urgently. We must reverse the trend by cutting emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases across the board. We have the knowledge and the tools for action and pleading ignorance can no longer be an excuse.

The time to act is now before this escalates beyond control, and everyone should take note of what the future holds if not for us then our children.
